Loic Remy does not address Aston Villa's main failings, but is perfect player to begin with

Aston Villa striker are targeting Chelsea striker Loic Remy.

Bit part Chelsea striker Loic Remy is a transfer target for Aston Villa, their manager Remi Garde has confirmed.

The BBC reported that Garde told his press conference that he is aiming to tempt his fellow Frenchman to Villa Park, and believes he is a good fit for the club because he is proven in the Premier League.

He said: "Loic is special because he knows the country and the league and he would be an interesting player for the team.

"He is part of some players I'll try to attract to Aston Villa for sure."

Garde is right to acknowledge that Remy would not be the only player or position he is targeting, because goals alone cannot save Aston Villa.

Currently they sit adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, 11 points from safety, and Garde is still to win a match since replacing Tim Sherwood.

The team is bereft of confidence, and this is leading to mistakes at the back, with poor play from their full-backs highlighted as part of their problem in losing to Norwich City at the weekend.

Having more goalscoring ability and pace up front will aid Villa, but if they are to get serious about a survival fight, they need to strengthen their defence and add more steel in midfield.

Even then it will be tough, and this is part of the problem Villa face. Their league position is so dire that potential signings will be put off moving to the club, knowing they could be playing in the Championship next year.

This is why loan deals for players like Remy, motivated to play regularly and make the France Euro 2016 squad, could just work.

He is a big enough name to even help convince other targets that Villa are a club which could just surprise people, and therefore is an ideal player to for Garde to start with, when pushing ahead with transfer plans.
