Manchester City completely different side with and without Vincent Kompany

A look at how Manchester City fare with and without Vincent Kompany

Arsenal host Manchester City on Monday night football in the final Premier League game before Christmas.

Both teams will have the opportunity to top the table on Christmas Day should Leicester City slip up at Everton on Saturday.

The Gunners head into the match on a good run in December – beating Sunderland 3-1, thrashing Olympiacos 3-0 and comfortably seeing off Aston Villa, 2-0 last weekend.

Though Manchester City won their UEFA Champions League group by beating Borussia Mönchengladbach, their Premier League performances either side haven't been convincing.

Manuel Pellegrini's side were convincingly beaten 2-0 at Stoke City before last weekend's stoppage time win at home to managerless and struggling Swansea City.

One player missing who sticks out like a sore thumb in terms of Manchester City's defensive record this season is Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian international has missed City's last four Premier League games with a calf injury and isn't expected to be back on Monday. During that run, they have shipped eight goals, picking up only six points.

Below is a table of goals conceded by Manchester City this season. As you'll see, the Citizens have only let in one goal in eight games when Kompany has played, whereas they have not kept a single clean sheet in the eight games he has been absent from:

3-0 @ West Brom 1-2 vs West Ham
3-0 vs Chelsea 1-4 @ Tottenham
2-0 @ Everton 6-1vs Newcastle
2-0 vs Watford 5-1 vs Bournemouth
1-0 @ Crystal Palace 1-4 vs Liverpool
0-0 @ Manchester United 3-1 vs Southampton
2-1 vs Norwich City 0-2 @ Stoke City
0-0 @ Aston Villa 2-1 vs Swansea City

It's not only goals conceded and the results that stand out in the club captain's absence, but the shots on target allowed are also a concern for the title chasers.

With Vincent Kompany:

OppositionResultShots on Target Faced
@ West Brom 3-0 2
Chelsea 3-0 3
@ Everton 2-0 1
Watford 2-0 0
@ Crystal Palace 1-0 2
@ Manchester United 0-0 1
Norwich City 2-1 3
@ Aston Villa 0-0 0

Without Vincent Kompany:

OppositionResultShots on Target Faced
West Ham 1-2 3
@ Tottenham 1-4 8
Newcastle 6-1 4
Bournemouth 5-1 1
Liverpool 1-4 9
Southampton 3-1 8
@Stoke City 0-2 4
Swansea City 2-1 7

Manchester City have allowed only 12 shots at Joe Hart's goal in the 720 minutes Vincent Kompany has been in the team - opponents including Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea.  It's a completely different tale without the centre-back - the England number 1 has faced a staggering 44 shots on target during 720 minutes.

This is how Manchester City compare to the rest of the Premier League when Kompany is absent:

Shots on Target Faced (per game)
Sunderland 6.19
Newcastle 5.56
Manchester City without Kompany 5.50
Everton 5.19
Aston Villa 5.13
Stoke 5.13
Chelsea 5.06
Norwich 4.63
West Brom 4.63
West Ham 4.63
Bournemouth 4.25
Leicester 4.19
Swansea 4.19
Crystal Palace 4.13
Watford 3.81
Arsenal 3.69
Manchester United 3.38
Southampton 3.38
Tottenham 3.38
Liverpool 2.81
Manchester City with Kompany 1.50

Manchester City are at both ends of the table. With their captain they have faced a league low average of only 1.5 shots on target per game - significantly lower than the next best defence, Liverpool. Without him though, and only Sunderland and Newcastle have a poorer defensive record - City allowing an extra four shots on target, on average, per game.
