Report: Kolo Toure likely to depart Liverpool in the summer

Toure is out of contract with the Reds in the summer and Jurgen Klopp could have another defender lined up.

Liverpool are likely to say goodbye to experienced defender Kolo Toure in the summer when his contract expires according to a report in the Daily Express.

Toure has acted predominantly as cover during his time with the Reds with this season his third at Anfield, and has made over 50 appearances for the club in that time.

This season he has been mostly used in cup competitions and in the Europa League, while making the odd cameo appearance towards the end of Premier League encounters.

It was mentioned in a report suggesting that manager Jurgen Klopp is looking to secure the services of Schalke centre-back Joel Matip on a free transfer in the summer. As a result, it looks likely that one of Liverpool's defenders will make way.

Mamadou Sakho has played well under Klopp while Martin Skrtel has been a virtual ever-present, and Dejan Lovren saw an improvement in his form prior to his injury as he was nominated for the Premier League's Player of the Month award.

The Liverpool Echo reported last month that Toure hoped to perform well enough to be offered a new contract by the club, and said he was not thinking about retiring from the game.

Although he has not been a regular for the Reds during his time at Anfield, and there have been times when his composure has deserted him, he has become a well-liked figure among Liverpool fans.

One thing Liverpool would be losing is a wealth of experience, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Toure when it comes to a potential new deal with Liverpool, or interest from elsewhere.
