Thiago Alcantara discusses Manchester United star's attempts to persuade him to join

Thiago Alcantara has confirmed that David de Gea tried to get him to sign for Manchester United.

Bayern Munich superstar Thiago Alcantara has told The Mail that David de Gea tried to persuade him to join Manchester United.

Alcantara was strongly linked with a move in 2013, with The Guardian claiming he was 'likely' to join from Barcelona.

The Spaniard went on to join Bayern Munich instead, and admits there was never a strong approach from Manchester United.

He said: "There was never any firm proposal. David de Gea wanted me to join. He wrote a message on my match ball after we'd beaten Italy in the final. But I'd have done the same with him. He is one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world.

"You always want to play with the best. But it was always going to be Munich. All I will say is that it (the Premier League) is an amazing league, it is probably the best league in the world but I'm very happy at Bayern and fulfilled with what I am doing."

Thiago had his struggles with injury in his first couple of seasons at Bayern, but he is now playing better than ever and enjoying his role with the German side.

His comments underline how United failed to really push hard for him while he was available from Barcelona, a clear failure on the part of then manager David Moyes, and chief executive Ed Woodward.

With Pep Guardiola going to Bayern, United may have struggled to win the battle to sign him, but it appears they barely even tried.
