The former Tottenham assistant has been discussing the current boss.

Gus Poyet thinks highly of Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino, according to FourFourTwo.

Indeed, the former no.2 at White Hart Lane is pleased the north London club have given the Argentine their backing and feels they are being rewarded by the football on show at Tottenham.

Pochettino’s men lost 2-1 to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon but that ended a long unbeaten run and there has been plenty of excitement generated already this season, even if some of it dampened after the Newcastle loss.

Poyet is quoted as telling Omnisport: “I think what Mauricio Pochettino is doing is impressive. I’m pleased he is still there and that they are backing him because he shows that he can make a team of young players play great football.

“What he did at Southampton was unique and then when you go to Tottenham the responsibilities are different. You need to do certain things in a different way.

“Last season he had good moments, some players who went to another level like Harry Kane. Now, with their system and the players understanding what he wants, I think we are seeing a Tottenham that is capable of finishing higher.”

Next up for Tottenham is a trip back to Southampton, where Pochettino will no doubt want his side to return to winning ways swiftly.

The Saints have been struggling for form lately and may therefore present the perfect opposition at the perfect time for Spurs.

Tottenham have only lost two Premier League games all season but have accumulated an unwanted amount of draws. A response against Southampton will be the perfect way to bounce back from defeat to Newcastle United, when the north London side led for the majority of the game.
