The Arsenal star was once again pivotal in their win over Aston Villa.
The German has been in fine form so far this season, as he has racked up the assists, leading the Premier League in that regard, with 13 already to his name.
He continued that fine form in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, as he unselfishly set up Aaron Ramsey for an easy tap and his side’s second goal.
The former Real Madrid man has come in for a lot of praise for his performances this season, but Lawrenson says that he doesn’t get as much as he deserves.
"This is the season when Arsenal have to win the Premier League. The worry is, they always seem to let you down,” he told BBC Sport.
"One thing in their favour though is that this season Mesut Ozil has been fantastic. He really hasn't got the column inches he deserves.
"Jose Mourinho once said to me, when sometimes he would turn his back in training with Real Madrid he could always tell when Ozil struck the ball. It made a different sound."
While there has been plenty of praise for the way Ozil has been performing this season, what hasn’t been praised quite as much is the way he has stepped up in the side.
The German has become a leader in the team over recent weeks as a number of Arsenal’s stars have fallen to one injury or another.
He was often criticised for going missing in games in the past, and that has not been the case this season. Arsenal fans will be hoping that is something that continues as they eye winning the title come the end of the campaign.
