Newcastle to launch £8m bid for Tottenham’s Andros Townsend - report

The England international is on the fringes at White Hart Lane.

Newcastle are reportedly ready to try and lure Andros Townsend to the Tyneside club, with The Daily Mail stating that Mike Ashley has signed off on a £8 million January bid of the flying winger.

The England international has had an up-and-down time of it since breaking into the North London outfit’s first team in 2013, with exceptional performances for club and country.

However, the wideman has found himself surplus to requirements this season and has had to watch on from the sidelines as the White Hart Lane team impress on the pitch.

Mauricio Pochettino has preferred to use the likes of Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min in his starting XI in 2015-16, with Townsend limited to a number of substitute appearances.

With a role for England at Euro 2016 his aim, it is widely expected that Townsend may look to leave North London in the new year.

The Daily Mail claim that Mike Ashley is set to perform a u-turn over his sentiments that English players are too expensive and will sanction an £8 million move for the former QPR loanee when the window opens.

Newcastle are facing a relegation struggle and Townsend’s injection of speed and direct play could well be a hit with the St James’ Park faithful.
