Disallowed Liverpool goal eerily similar to famous Shearer strike

Alberto Moreno’s goal that never was for Liverpool had shades of a famous effort from the Newcastle United icon.

The St James’ Park faithful bore witness to a Liverpool goal that certainly had shades of a memorable goal once scored by Newcastle United talisman Alan Shearer.

But while that notable effort for the Magpies stood, Alberto Moreno found his all-too-similar strike chalked off after the linesman raised his flag.

There was just one snag though: replays suggested the Spaniard was not offside.

And so Liverpool fans were not only denied what could yet prove to be a crucial equaliser, but also the chance to see what may have gone on to become one of the all-time great Premier League goals.

Moreno’s effort also bore more than a passing similarity to Shearer’s famous goal against Aston Villa from back when the Match of the Day pundit was in his prime (November 2001).

Boasting a similarly lofted pass out to the edge of the box, followed by a perfectly timed side foot finish, the only main difference was that Moreno’s came on the left hand side of the penalty area while Shearer’s was on the right.

Not that Newcastle fans will be complaining too much about the decision, with the Toon going on to grab a second goal through Georginio Wijnaldum as part of a potentially crucial 2-0 win.

Still, it would have been a goal to savour.
