Charlie Nicholas points out Everton’s Achilles heel

Charlie Nicholas suggests that Everton are defensively vulnerable.

Former Celtic and Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (November 28) that Everton’s Achilles heel is their defence.

“It (Everton squad) is top-heavy on the attacking side,” said the former Scotland international. “I think they need more protection defensively.

“That’s been their Achilles heel. That’s why they had to keep (John) Stones so dramatically by knocking back that money.”

Everton are a very entertaining side to watch and play attacking football, but they do tend to concede more goals than they should.

The Toffees have conceded as many as 19 goals in 14 Premier League matches so far this season.

While some might suggest that the number is not that frightening, one needs to take into consideration that teams like Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have conceded far fewer.

United have shipped just 10 goals in the league so far this season, while Arsenal and Tottenham have conceded 12 and 11 respectively.

Even Crystal Palace, who are actually above the Everton in the league table, have conceded fewer goals than the Toffees (14).

For the Merseyside outfit to finish in the top six of the Premier League this season, they need to become defensively stronger.
