Danny Murphy claims Pochettino made wrong decision, still raves about exhausted Tottenham

Danny Murphy has had his say on Tottenham's 0-0 draw against Chelsea.

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy has told BBC's Match of the Day 2, aired on November 29th, that he disagreed with Mauricio Pochettino's team selection against Qarabag.

Spurs faced a long trip to Azerbaijan to take on Qarabag in the Europa League on Thursday night, and they managed to claim a 1-0 win thanks to Harry Kane's goal.

However, Tottenham then had to play Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, and played out a 0-0 draw as the Spurs players were clearly exhausted.

Surprisingly, Pochettino picked eight of the same players from the team that beat Qarabag just days ago, and ex-Spurs midfielder Murphy told BBC's Match of the Day 2 that he felt Pochettino made the wrong decision with his team selection, suggesting that the players were just too tired to beat Chelsea.

Murphy highlighted that the midday kickoff will have also had an effect on Tottenham due to the unfamiliarity of preparing so early for game, but he did heap praise on Spurs for their organisation and discipline during their stalemate with Chelsea, as he was clearly impressed that they were so well-drilled despite being tired.

"As a player, you're having a pre-match meal at an hour you're not used to - it's very difficult," said Murphy. "But I think it was that, mixed with the trip. He played eight of those guys who played today on Thursday, which I think was the wrong thing to do personally."

"Just saying that, but Tottenham - even when they were tired - were well organised, well disciplined, good communication on the pitch, still looked a solid unit, and I think that's credit to them," he added.

After the performance against Chelsea, Pochettino may now look to rotate his side more for Europa League games, especially if they involve a lot of travelling, as the Qarabag game did.

It was clear that Tottenham just ran out of steam against Chelsea, but with a week to rest before the West Brom game next weekend, Spurs should be back to full speed at The Hawthorns.
