Ashley Williams defends under-fire Swansea boss Garry Monk

Garry Monk’s job is reportedly under threat following Swansea’s poor run of form.

Ashley Williams believes that Garry Monk is the right man to turn things around at Swansea.

The Welsh outfit sit 14th in the Premier League table after winning just one of their last nine matches.

Despite signing the likes of Andre Ayew last summer, Swansea have been unable to continue their consistent form from last season as the pressure builds on Monk.

The Daily Mail claims that chairman Huw Jenkins is indeed considering the manager’s position, but is said to be reluctant at the prospect of handing over £3.5 million in compensation.

Monk only signed a new contract in July, and Jenkins apparently feels that the club would not be able to justify parting with a hefty amount of cash just to let him go.

However, Monk appears to still retain the support of his players, with Williams insisting that the boss is working hard to rectify Swansea’s dire situation.

The skipper said: “This is me coming out and backing the manager officially because I don’t think we’ve done that enough.

“We back him, of course we back him. I thought about it in the week that we haven’t really come out enough and said that we back him.

“I don’t think we need to for him, because he knows that we back him. We speak to him a lot and he’s working as hard as we are, or harder because he understands the situation we’re in.

“We’re trying to do it for him as well as ourselves. We see how hard he works and see he’s coming in for a lot of stick at the minute.”
