Liverpool defeated Manchester City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has disclosed to reporters for The Sun that boss Jurgen Klopp told the players they must be happy with their performance and go out and do it again at half time of the game against Manchester City.

The Reds shocked City by racing in to a three-goal lead at the Etihad with goals from Philippe Coutinho and Firmino coming after Eliaquim Mangala put through his own net after just nine minutes.

Despite Sergio Aguero pulling one back just before half-time, the visitors entered the interval with a commanding lead and a number of their players appeared in disbelief at what was occurring.

Speaking to reporters for The Sun, Mignolet discusses how Klopp managed to calm the players down at half-time and help the team focus in order to complete the job in the second period.

“We scored three early goals and just before half-time there was a bit of a setback, but we didn’t let it affect us. In the second half we were the better side again,” Mignolet explained.

“The gaffer has worked really hard on that and at half-time he said when you come into the dressing room at 3-1 away to City, you have to be happy and go out in the second half with a positive feeling.”

“That’s what we did and we didn’t let it affect us. We played our game and scored a fourth goal.”

Liverpool defended well enough in the second period and maintained their high pressing, forcing City into making hurried passes and mistakes which led to further openings.

The game was probably done in terms of a contest heading in to the final ten minutes, yet Martin Skrtel made sure of the victory with a superb rising shot eight minutes from time.

There were so many pleasing aspects about Liverpool’s display, yet Klopp’s post-match comments hinted that there is plenty of work still to be done and that will help keep the players grounded.
