West Ham boss throws down the gauntlet to Manuel Lanzini

Slaven Bilic has spoken of the need to step up in Dimitri Payet’s absence.

West Ham United boss says fellow attacking star Manuel Lanzini needs to step up in the absence of Dimitri Payet, following the Frenchman’s long injury layoff, the London Evening Standard report.

The Hammers’ star player of the season, Payet, has been ruled out for up to three months with injury after succumbing to heavy challenge from Everton’s James McCarthy two weeks ago.

West Ham are certainly going to miss his presence, yet it offers an opportunity for another player to step up their game and become a more prominent figure in the team.

Speaking to the LES, Bilic has named Lanzini among those he is looking to for a positive reaction: “Manuel Lanzini has formed a good understanding with Payet but he has to be as effective on his own.”

“We have players who must step up now and do more without him. We aren’t going to play with 10 men. We have standards that cannot drop because we lose one important player.”

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, Lanzini has been an impressive figure for West Ham so far this season and has contributed in a number of key areas.

Aside from his three goals and one assist, the 22-year-old averages 2.1 shots, 0.9 key passes, 2.3 successful take-ons and 5.2 ball recoveries per Premier League encounter.

Moreover, he is one of the most comfortable out there on the ball and his average of 47.3 touches and 30.2 accurate passes per match shows how much he gets involved.

Lanzini has so far featured more in a wide role, yet in Payet’s absence he may well come in to the middle.
