Grading Sunderland’s summer signings: Kaboul gets an E

Sunderland signed Sebastian Coates, Adam Matthews, Jeremain Lens, Younes Kaboul, Fabio Borini, Yann M’Vila, Ola Toivonen and DeAndre Yedlin in the summer transfer window.

Sebastian Coates - C

Sebastian Coates joined Sunderland from Liverpool in the summer transfer window, having played on loan for the Black Cats last season.

The 25-year-old Uruguay international centre-back has struggled in the Premier League for a while now, and he continues to fail in the top flight of English football.

The former Nacional star has been a liability at the back for Sunderland, although on occasions he has shown that he can step up.

Adam Matthews - N/A

Adam Matthews has played just 37 minutes in the Premier League for Sunderland, and it would not be fair to judge him right now.

The former Celtic defender has been injured for a while now, and he will be looking to do his part for the Black Cats when he makes a fully recovery.

Jeremain Lens - B-

Jeremain Lens has not taken by the Premier League by storm since his arrival from Dynamo Kyiv in the summer transfer window, but he has done relatively well.

The Netherlands international winger has scored two goals and created 10 chances in eight league appearances so far.

Younes Kaboul - E

Younes Kaboul struggled for playing time at Tottenham Hotspur, and it was a huge mistake from Sunderland to sign the defender in the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old centre-back has often looked lost in defence and has been hugely disappointing.

If Kaboul continues to play for Sunderland and his performances do not improve, then no one can save the Black Cats from relegation.

Fabio Borini - E

Yet another signing that simple does not make sense. Fabio Borini has been proven a flop in the Premier League, so why did Sunderland recruit the striker from Liverpool in the summer?

Four appearances, no goals, one chance created - it couldn’t have been worse.

Yann M’Vila - C

Yann M’Vila may have been a very good player when he was at Rennes, but he is not doing great at the moment.

The Frenchman joined Sunderland on a season-long loan deal from Rubin Kazan in the summer transfer window after struggling at Inter Milan in 2014-15.

The 25-year-old has scored one goal and created 14 chances in seven Premier League appearances, but he has also made a defensive error which led to an attempt on goal.

Ola Toivonen - D

Ola Toivonen has struggled to show his quality in the Premier League, creating just five chances in five Premier League games.

The Rennes-owned attacker has not scored a goal and has a shot accuracy of just 50%.

DeAndre Yedlin - N/A

DeAndre Yedlin moved to Sunderland on a season-long loan deal from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

The USA international right-back has played just twice for the Black Cats and only once in the league.

It is too early to judge the 22-year-old, but he needs to be given more chances as the season progresses.
