Michael Chopra says Rangers’ Martyn Waghorn is good enough for Premier League

Alloa Athletic forward Michael Chopra believes that Rangers striker and former Sunderland teammate Martyn Waghorn could score 30 goals this season.

Alloa Athletic forward Michael Chopra has told The Daily Record that Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn is good enough to play in the Barclays Premier League.

Waghorn has been in superb form for Rangers since joining them from English League One outfit Wigan Athletic in the summer transfer window.

The former Leicester City man has scored 14 goals in 14 games for the Gers and has been a key figure in their stunning start to the 2015-16 Scottish Championship campaign.

Rangers have won all nine of their league matches and are firm favourites to gain automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership at the end of the season.

Alloa forward Chopra played with Waghorn at Sunderland and has spoke highly of his quality, while also suggesting that he could be destined for a move to the Premier League.

“He could easily break 25-30 goals this season and, you never know, a club in the Premier League might take a chance on him again if he keeps scoring in the Scottish Premiership,” Chopra told The Daily Record.

“He’s still got the ability and the quality to play in England’s top flight. He just has to keep working hard and someone will show a bit of faith in him.

“The Premier League is still one of the best in the world. No disrespect to Scottish football but if you get a chance down there, you take it.”

Waghorn has regained his form and confidence at Rangers, but it will take a lot more than scoring goals in the Scottish Championship for a Premier League club to sign him.

The 25-year-old will need to prove himself in the Premiership next season - if Rangers get promoted - and show that he is capable of scoring goals regularly in the top flight of Scottish football as well.
