Ledley King gives his verdict on Tottenham's defence

Spurs currently hold the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King has heaped praise on the Spurs rearguard after their impressive start to the season.

The Lilywhites boast the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League – having conceded five goals in their first seven games – with just one goal against in their last four outings.

Key to their defensive improvement has been the arrival of Toby Alderweireld - signed from Atletico Madrid this summer – and the emergence of Eric Dier in a holding midfield role.

“I’ve been really impressed,” said King, in an interview posted on the club's Twitter account.

“For the first time in a while there has been a settled centre-back pairing… they obviously know each other really well and you can see that in their performances.

“The full-backs have also been very impressive and so has Eric (Dier) in front of them… I’ve been impressed with the defensive shape of the team,” he added.

Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are familiar with each other from their time at Ajax and the Belgian national team and have seamlessly established their partnership at White Hart Lane.

King feels the familiarity between the two, and the added security that brings, has fed through to the rest of the defence.

He said: “The relationship the two centre-backs have has made it easy for them and the rest of the back four. It’s been a pretty settled squad and that’s why we’re reaping the rewards of the great relationship amongst them.”

Beyond the defensive outfielders, Hugo Lloris continues to display the talent that has put him on the radar of the world’s biggest clubs, and King was quick to laud the Frenchman’s abilities, adding: “He’s great at sweeping up behind them… what a great man to have behind when teams do get through. He’s one of the best keepers in Europe for me and I’d loved to have played with Hugo myself.”
