Leeds United star Luke Murphy can provide inspiration to Sam Byram - Or he goes down Warnock's route

Sam Byram needs to look at Luke Murphy's turnaround in form last season for Leeds.

Sam Byram's future at Leeds is in doubt - but there is still time to change his fortunes.

The defender turned winger need only look at the fortunes of Leeds players past and present to see the two possible paths he could take.

A year ago midfielder Luke Murphy looked lost at Leeds. He was underutilised by Darko Milanic, and had failed to live up to the £1 million fee the club paid to sign him from Crewe.

He was not a player supporters regarded highly, but this would soon change.

Neil Redfearn had belief in the midfielder's ability, and inspired him to start living up to his potential.

Murphy is seen as Leeds' most complete midfielder, able to score goals and dig in defensively, and this year even agreed a new contract to stay at the club.

If Byram can turn his season around, this early period of poor form will be looked on as an anomaly, and show he has the character to deal with similar challenges in his career.

He may find the only way to focus, is to push to sign a new deal, and see if the security helps bring about an improvement in form.

The other path is to follow Stephen Warnock's example. He can get his head down, work hard, and stay professional, but walk away in the January transfer window.

Warnock had failed to see eye to eye with Massimo Cellino, and also found himself dropped during the ill-fated Milanic era.

Yet as Warnock has found out, the grass is not always greener. He has struggled to hold down a place in the Derby County team, and given Byram's form, it is not unrealistic to expect him to find himself warming the bench if he makes a move to a Premier League club.
