Former Newcastle youth player Matty Pattison takes dig at Thauvin's price-tag

Newcastle United's French winger has come in for criticism after his latest performance.

Former Newcastle United player Matty Pattison has taken to Twitter to comment on the Magpies’ recent signing Florian Thauvin.

Pattison came through the youth ranks at St James’ Park but he featured just 15 times for Newcastle’s senior side between 2005 and 2008 before moving to Norwich City, first on loan and then in a permanent deal.

Since then, Pattison has played for Santos FC Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Bidvest Wits FC, but these days he is turning out for Gateshead, where he has scored six goals and provided six assists in 37 appearances.

Pattison never really came close to making it as a regular in the Newcastle first-team but his comments regarding Thauvin may make for interesting reading given his own struggles to break through a decade ago.

“Just caught up on Match of the Day,” Pattison wrote on Twitter, “I know he’s only played two games but Thauvin…if that’s what you get for £13million these days I came through 10 years too early.”

Thauvin has actually played five matches for Newcastle to date, but the sentiment was clear; and yet having only recently arrived at St James’ Park surely the 22-year-old deserves a little more time before a final judgement is made on his ability.

In contrast, Pattison was at the club for eight years including his time in the academy, so the club had plenty of time to make their mind up regarding his own potential.
