Everton new boy Aaron Lennon sheds light on being frozen out at Tottenham

The former England international left Tottenham Hotspur this summer after a decade at the club.

Former Spurs winger Aaron Lennon has revealed how the coaching staff handled the out-of-favour player contingent this summer, in an interview with the Independent.

A number of senior players were sold in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad revamp, and Lennon revealed that the manager’s plans were clear from the off.

“I went back in for pre-season and there were a few of us told they were not going to be in Tottenham’s plans,” he said.

“It was football. Certain managers just don’t fancy you and it wasn’t just me – there was a complete overhaul with a totally new squad.”

Lennon’s demise at Spurs was an intriguing one after the spritely winger was mysteriously dropped following some decent displays in the first few months of last season.

The 28-year old made nine Premier League appearances and was lauded for his defensive contribution and ability to press from the front, but failed to feature after the Europa League clash with Besiktas on December 11th.

He was shipped out to Everton on loan in January and impressed sufficiently for the Toffees to go back in this summer and complete a deadline day deal for him at the start of this month.

The experienced winger will now be hoping to kick-start his career with a return to centre stage after several seasons on the fringes at White Hart Lane.
