Report: Tottenham monitoring Saint Etienne midfielder Jeremy Clement

The search for a defensive midfielder rumbles on for Spurs, as the end of the transfer window looms.

Saint Etienne midfielder Jeremy Clement is the latest defensive midfielder to be linked with a switch to White Hart Lane, as Tottenham Hotspur look to add steel to their youthful midfield.

A report in the print version of France Football, as covered by Le 10 Sport, claims that Spurs have scouted the former Rangers man in the past and are now set to ramp up their interest.

The French club are eager to wait until after their Europa League qualifier with Milsami before parting with the 30-year old, however.

Clement has been an established Ligue 1 midfielder for the past decade, appearing for Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain – with a year at Ibrox in between – before joining Saint Etienne in 2011.

Whilst he would arrive at White Hart Lane with undoubted experience, Clement is hardly the marquee signing many fans crave, and at 30 years of age would go against the Spurs policy of buying young talents with sell-on value.

It would be an underwhelming end to the window - to say the least - to bring in Clement having been linked to the likes of Sven Bender (by the Daily Mirror) and Victor Wanyama (in the Daily Mail), but with the days counting down and desperation levels rising, stranger things have happened.
