Spanish press slaughter slow Luis Suarez and barely seen Lionel Messi

Sport have berated the Barcelona team, including their two main stars, after a surprise 4-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona’s players have been lamented in the Spanish press following a surprise 4-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup, as per Sport.

The European champions were not at the races at San Mames, with a long-range San Jose effort and an Aritz Aduriz hat-trick sealing a commanding first leg victory for the Basque outfit.

In the aftermath of the game, Luis Enrique’s players have been heavily criticised by Sport, who did not sugarcoat how poor the main stars were.

Although Adriano received the worst rating of 2/10 for his showing, both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were also lambasted.

Suarez was labelled ‘slow in the box’ and the fact that he did not get a shot on goal was highlighted, while he was given a 4/10 rating.

Messi, who is the favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or award after a sparkling start to 2015, received a 5/10.

The media claimed that the Argentine superstar was ‘barely seen’ during the game, with only the committing of a foul and effort from a free-kick of note.

Barcelona made hard work of their European Super Cup triumph over Sevilla, while the Blaugrana were also beaten by Fiorentina in pre-season.

As such, it appears that the Spanish champions will need to go back to the drawing board if they are to have a successful 2015-16 campaign.
