Liverpool's Joe Gomez happy to be proved right regarding Brendan Rodgers' faith in youth

The Liverpool teenager has reflected on his Premier League debut.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been speaking to the club’s official website about making his Premier League debut against Stoke City on Sunday.

The Reds had a poor recent record against Mark Hughes’ side but they came out on top at the weekend courtesy of a wonder-strike from Brazilian Philippe Coutinho.

Gomez shone throughout having already shown what he can do during pre-season and it seems that despite his age he is already the best option for Brendan Rodgers at left-back.

Speaking after the match, the 18-year-old told, “One of the reasons I wanted to come to Liverpool is because Brendan is such a great manager giving young players opportunities and I’m thankful for that.

“That last few months I wold never have dreamed that I’d get the opportunity as quickly as I have.”

But having seized that chance it seems Gomez has now moved ahead of Alberto Moreno at left-back, even if the former is more commonly known as a centre-back.

In the short term, Gomez is likely to feature predominantly in a wider position but Liverpool fans will know they have a player who could be a vital part of their defence for the next decade or more.

Ultimately he is likely to feature in the heart of the defence, potentially alongside a player like Tiago Ilori if the young Portuguese can seize his chance as Gomez has done so emphatically.
