Gerard Pique backs Sunderland as biggest Premier League surprise package on Twitter

The former Manchester United defender also backed the Old Trafford outfit for the title.

Barcelona and ex-Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has picked Sunderland as his biggest surprise Premier League package on Twitter.

Indeed, in a rather random move, the Spaniard picked the Black Cats out when advertising an app that allows fans to make predictions for the coming season.

The Barcelona man chose his former club Manchester United as title winners but refused to pick who would go down. As his biggest surprise, however, Pique picked Sunderland. Did the 28-year-old do it at random or does he truly believe in Dick Advocaat's charges?

The Black Cats begin their Premier League campaign at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon and many pundits have singled both Sunderland and the Foxes out as potential strugglers this campaign. Advocaat, too, has repeatedly reiterated his desire to strengthen the Sunderland squad ahead of the league season. Can Pique's prediction act as a source of luck...?

Based on his backing of Manchester United, one might think otherwise. Louis van Gaal's side have strengthened in the transfer window but are still short of a striker and are arguably still far inferior to their rivals in terms of squad depth.
