Birmingham leading the chase for Leyton Orient defender Shane Lowry

HITC Sport understands a number of Championship and League One clubs are keen on the former Aston Villa trainee.

Birmingham City are leading the chase for former Aston Villa defender Shane Lowry, HITC Sport understands from sources close to a potential deal.

The 26-year-old is currently with Leyton Orient, but he is free to leave them due to a clause in his contract following their relegation to League Two last season.

Now it is understood that a number of Championship and League One clubs are pursuing his signature, while interest has also been shown from the Middle and Far East.

Birmingham and Wigan Athletic are heading the chase and have made moves, and now Lowry is weighing up his options.

Lowry joined Orient last summer after departing Millwall.

He had spent the two years prior to that with the Lions, having moved to the Den after failing to make the breakthrough at Aston Villa.

His time with the Premier League outfit delivered just three competitive appearances, with most of his experience picked up during loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Leeds United, Sheffield United and Millwall – prior to his permanent switch.
