Liverpool and Christian Benteke styles match says Brendan Rodgers

The manager has insisted that the Belgian will fit it at Anfield amidst suggestions there will be a clash of styles.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted to the club’s official website that there will be no clash of styles with his philosophy and Christian Benteke.

The Belgian striker was signed in a big money from Aston Villa earlier this week, the latest in a number of arrivals at Anfield this summer.

He has been brought into the side to improve their goal scoring record, after they struggled in that area last season. However it has been suggested that his personal playing style does not fit in with that of Brendan Rodgers, meaning the move has the potential to be another big failure for the manager.

Rodgers is having none of that though, instead enthusing about his new signing.

“Obviously I've heard stuff about the style, [but] I think he'll only complement it and help us,” he told

“There are a number of qualities that he has. I think first and foremost his goals, if you look at his goals record since the time that he’s been in the Premier League he's up there with the best in terms of numbers.”

Other attributes fit Liverpool style

While it would be amiss to suggest Benteke is simply a target man, it is fair to say that his size and presence in the air were certainly used to great effect by former club Villa.

That is why many are suggesting he may be a bad fit at Liverpool, with them playing more of a passing game and not being known for crossing the ball into the box too often or having players that like to play that way.

And while that is clearly the type of football Benteke thrives off of, Rodgers was keen to highlight the other areas of his game that will make him an asset in their system.

“He’s a big guy but he’s got the attributes that I like in terms of pace and movement,” he added.

“He's great in the air, strong, he can hold the game up, he can play on the counter-attack, he can play whenever the team is deep because he can hold the ball up with his physical strength. I don’t think there’s any doubt he'll fit our tactical idea of the game.”
