The Nantes defender has been linked with a move to Celtic Park this summer – so what should Hoops fans know about Papy Djilobodji?

Celtic could, according to The Scotsman, look to France for defensive reinforcements in the form of Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji – but what do Hoops supporters need to know about him?

The Nantes star has long been linked with a Parkhead switch and it would appear Celtic are still keen on completing a deal.

The Scotsman reports that the Hoops are hoping to recruit the 26-year-old this summer – so what do Celtic fans need to know about their potential future acquisition?

Here are five facts on this rising African star.

1. He’s as tall as Celtic’s very best

Standing tall at 6ft 4in, Djilobodji brings a considerable aerial presence to the Celtic ranks, rivalled only by that of Hoops defender Virgil van Dijk, who boasts a near identical height.

2. He was once a reported target for Chelsea

Before catching the eye of Celtic, Djilobodji was reportedly on the Blues’ radar, with The Daily Star citing reports in France that claimed the Senegalese defender was a target for Jose Mourinho back in January 2014.

3. He wants to play in the Champions League AND win it

Back when the Pensioners first showed an interest, Djilobodji was busy talking up his Champions League prospects, in quotes carried by Le Parisien.

“I want to play in big clubs competing in the Champions League and win it. The road is still long but I work every day to make that happen.”

4. He’s not one for shying away from a tackle

A rugged and ready defender on his day, Djilobodji is known for his excellent aerial ability and penchant for a tough tackle when required.

However, this has landed him in trouble on occasions: he picked up 11 yellow cards in Ligue 1 last term – his highest ever total over a single season.

5. His fortunes for Senegal have been mixed

Selected by Alain Giresse to play as part of the Senegal squad at the 2014 Africa Cup of Nations, Djilobodji endured mixed fortunes at the tournament.

A starter for Senegal in their 2-1 opening game win over Ghana, Djilobodji was dropped for the 1-1 draw with South Africa and only returned for the final match against Algeria, with Senegal beaten 2-0 and exiting early.
