Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren will have to pick his side up ahead of the rest of the club’s pre-season after they went down 2-1 in a match against Club Atlas.
It was a challenging workout for the team as they prepare for the new Premier League season, with the intention of ensuring that the struggles which plagued the club last season don’t rear their ugly heads all over again.
While the result is not particularly significant, McClaren has enough experience to know that he needs to prevent a negative mentality from developing because of the consistent defeats the squad suffered over the second half of last season.
Pre-season is a period which is more about players improving their general fitness levels to a point where they can stay effective throughout the more important competitive games, which are now just around the corner.
It’s also a good chance for key players in key positions to improve their fortunes and to show that they can be key players for the side over the next ten months, with a good example Mike Williamson in defence.
All members of Newcastle’s back four last season struggled at different times and they are under real pressure to show some quality and improvements moving forward.
Williamson was by no means at his best against Club Atlas looking off the pace and vulnerable against the speed and skill of the opposition.
Hopefully, he can work hard with McClaren to identify the key areas of his game which he needs to improve, while improving his fitness so he naturally becomes a bit sharper and a stranger to fatigue at all points of any game.
Here’s what Newcastle fans had to say about Williamson featuring during the game, with just over three weeks to go before the match against Southampton.
@NUFC360 the fact that Williamson and Gouffran are STILL involved is infuriating!— NUFC Stats (@NUFC_Stats) July 15, 2015
Mike Williamson is the most technical footballer I have ever seen. #NUFC Not once have I seen miss a hoof.— Himanshu Dhingra (@HD_07) July 15, 2015
Why oh why is Mike Williamson STILL getting his game for us?! #nufc— Gemma Boyes (@Gemma_Boyes) July 15, 2015
