High standards: Nadir Ciftci explains why he was 'gutted' with Celtic debut

The 23-year-old has been discussing his first ever game for the Bhoys.

Celtic debutant Nadir Ciftci received plenty of praise for his role in the Bhoys' 1-0 win over Real Socieded on Friday night - but he is 'gutted' he didn't add a goal during the friendly, according to the club's official website.

Indeed, Ciftci linked up well with his Celtic team-mates after coming on in the second half - but missed an opportunity to make it the dream debut (despite it only being a pre-season friendly).

The 23-year-old told Celtic's official site: "I should have scored and I’m gutted about that.

"I actually thought I was a bit further away from the goal and I tried to chip the goalkeeper but hopefully next time, I’ll hit the back of the net."

Champions League start?

So positive has the reaction been to Ciftci's second-half cameo in Celtic colours that many are calling for him to start as the Scottish champions' lone striker against Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier next week.

Plenty still feel Leigh Griffiths, last season's top scorer, should get the nod, though Ciftci's understanding with some of his former Dundee United team-mates has got boss Ronny Deila suggesting he is certainly in with a shout of starting against the Icelandic side.

One thing's for certain, in Griffiths and Ciftci, Celtic already have good strength in depth if they are to go one up top throughout the campaign.
