Report: Arsenal, Liverpool make official contact for Barcelona's Pedro Rodriguez

Barcelona’s Pedro Rodriguez is being courted by Arsenal and Liverpool, reports state.

According to the Spanish publication Diario Sport, Arsenal and Liverpool have made official contact with Pedro’s representatives regarding a potential Premier League switch.

The Spanish international’s future at Barcelona was placed into doubt last season as he often played second fiddle to the club’s 122-goal trident of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

Still, after plenty of speculation heading in the summer, the Nou Camp favourite honoured his loyalty to the club by signing a new contract with a 2019 expiry date.

However, Pedro’s new deal with the Catalans has done little to stop the speculation surrounding his future and fresh reports state Arsenal and Liverpool are vying to prise him away this summer.

“Various clubs have made their interest known in recent days. Liverpool and Arsenal have officially been in contact with Pedro’s representatives in order to negotiate a potential transfer,” Diario Sport say.

Could Arsenal or Liverpool tempt Pedro away from Barcelona?

The 27-year-old is undoubtedly a top quality winger who would improve most Premier League sides, but the likelihood of him actually leaving the Nou Camp is pretty slim given the circumstances.

Arsenal are going for the title this season, but their heavy competition for places in the final third would suggest that Pedro may not even become a regular first-team player.

Is he better than Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil? Arguably not. Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Serge Gnaby are also options out wide.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have no Champions League football to offer and there are no guarantees of breaking into the top four next season, especially considering the competition.

The Reds’ history and tradition may be able to attract some of Europe’s best players, but why trade guaranteed success in Barcelona for a risky switch to the Premier League?
