Report: Nicolas Lombaerts closing in on Sunderland move, Everton show interest

Everton have joined the race to sign Nicolas Lombaerts, although Sunderland are in pole position.

It was reported yesterday by Gianluca Di Marzio that Sunderland had agreed a fee to sign Nicolas Lombaerts from Zenit St. Petersburg, and a new report in HLN has updated the status of the transfer.

It is stated that the Belgian centre-back is all-but guaranteed to join the Black Cats, linking up with Dick Advocaat - who signed him for Zenit - and is set to travel to Sunderland today to wrap up a deal.

The Wearside club are willing to match his financial demands, as well as the £10 million asking price requested by the Russian club, and a deal looks set to be completed.

However, there is late interest in the 30-year-old from another Premier League side, with Everton stated in the report as showing a desire to move for Lombaerts.

The 33-capped international defender is being targeted by the Toffees, but they know a deal for Lombaerts will only become viable if they can raise the transfer funds by selling one of their own players.

It is not expected that a deal to take him to Merseyside will get off the ground, especially with Sunderland planning to wrap up his signing quickly, and despite the late interest from Everton, it is highly expected that Lombaerts will be turning out at the Stadium of Light next season.
