Report: Tjaronn Chery skips training as Aston Villa move edges closer

The FC Groningen winger is expected to join Villa this summer.

Aston Villa might have received a transfer boost today as it is clear that transfer target Tjaronn Chery did not attend FC Groningen’s first pre-season training session this week.

It is reported by Groninger Gezinsbode that 16 players have reported for first-team training with Groningen this week, but Chery was not one of them, despite previously being present for a photoshoot at the club.

The report claims that Chery is not with the club for training as he tries to force through a move to Villa.

Tim Sherwood has been linked with an interest in the player recently. It was reported by The Sun that Villa have tabled a £3.5 million bid for the player and are in competition with Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia for his signature.

Chery had a good season for Groningen last term, playing 36 times and scoring 15 times in the league. He also scored twice in their Dutch Cup run which ended in glory in the final v PEC Zwolle.

Where would he fit in?

It looks like Sherwood is a big fan of playing with three up top. However, he has already let Andreas Weimann head to Derby County and is keen to play Jack Grealish in a more central role.

Gabriel Agbonlahor is not an out-and-out winger and Charles N’Zogbia’s inconsistency is well known. Scott Sinclair will of course provide options but a fresh wide option could certainly help, Chery could be just that.
