Report: Roma interested in Tottenham-linked Aston Villa ace Christian Benteke

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been linked with a move away from Villa Park.

According to the Italian publication TMW, AS Roma are considering Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke as an ideal alternative to recent Europa League winner Carlos Bacca.

Villa’s Belgian international striker has attracted plenty of attention this summer following his wonderful late season form under former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood.

Benteke notched 15 goals in all competitions last season, taking his Villa tally to 49 strikes in 99 matches since joining the club from Genk in the summer of 2012.

As per a report in The Mirror, his status as one of the Premier League’s best centre-forwards saw Spurs ready an interesting summer proposal involving Andros Townsend heading the other way.

While such talk of a Spurs bid has gone quiet over the past few days, TMW reports that Benteke is now being considered in Italy as Roma’s ideal alternative to Bacca.

As per the report, the Serie A giants are keen on bringing in Bacca, but Sevilla’s hefty asking price could instead prompt Roma’s sporting director Walter Sabatini to turn his attention to Benteke.

Should Spurs push ahead with their interest for Benteke?

While Villa will be reluctant to sell, the Midlands outfit know that their top striker is good enough to play at the top level and it’s only a matter of time before he seeks regular European football.

Tottenham need competition or an alternative to Harry Kane, with fellow strikers Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor once again proving that they are not good enough for regular spots.

Benteke has all the attributes to be a big hit at White Hart Lane, and a transfer could ultimately benefit both clubs to some degree.
