Vlaar endured a tough season with Aston Villa due to injuries.
Vlaar, 30, made just 23 appearances for Villa in the 2014/15 season, and he has told SoccerNews that it was a ‘very disappointing’ campaign for him.
The Dutch centre-back said: “My body really needs a break [because of injury]. It’s been a very disappointing season.”
Vlaar was speaking ahead of the Netherlands international fixture with Latvia, in which he will not play so as to ensure a strong recovery ahead of next season. He spent a large spell of the campaign on the touchline, and although he impressed for Villa when playing, his lack of minutes was likely a reason for their enduring poor results.
He started just 19 Premier League games, missing two four-game spells and two five-game spells, and he loathes captaincy to Fabian Delph during his extended absence from match action.
There are still no confirmations as to where Vlaar will be playing next season, with his Villa contract expired, and although he has been offered a new deal, he does not look keen on signing one.
Due to his poor season, it is likely that he will look for a move away from the Birmingham-based club, and a fresh start could be the perfect way for him to recover his fitness and his place in the Netherlands international set-up.
It may not be the news that Villa fans want to hear, but Vlaar was disappointed with his own campaign, and that poor season could be the catalyst that sees the 30-year-old defender look for a move away from Villa Park this summer.
