We countdown five dream WWE matches that, unfortunately, never took place.
WWE thrives on matches the audience are unable to predict where either wrestler could credibly win and here are five matches which would have ticked that box but never happened.
5) Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
In 1992, Hulk Hogan was the face of WWF and Ric Flair was synonymous with WCW but the Nature Boy made the move over to their rivals and the writing was on the wall to have a huge match between two of the biggest draws in the business. Wrestlemania VIII was due to be the stage for the match and although the two squared off against each other in house shows, the match never made it to the big event. It is said Vince McMahon did not like the way the match came across and while fans would see the match in WCW when Hogan made the jump, WWE die-hards never witnessed Hogan vs Flair.
4) Triple H vs The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin
This triple threat match was very much in the works and set to take place at Survivor Series 1999 in what would have easily been the biggest match of its kind in history. These are three of WWE’s premier stars and would have set some decent PPV figures all competing in the same main event. However, WWE had known for weeks that Austin was unable to compete in the match and needed some serious neck surgery but they decided to advertise for the match anyway. On the show, Austin was run over backstage and Big Show replaced him, actually winning the WWE Title in a dull affair.
3) Shawn Michaels vs Eddie Guerrero
Despite being on the same WWE roster between the years 2002-2005, Michaels and Guerrero never once squared off against each other. Two of the most technically-gifted wrestlers to ever step in the ring, it is a tragedy that they were always on different brands or involved in different feuds which never allowed a match to materialise. It is said that there were plans for the two to meet at Wrestlemania 22 in 2006 where Eddie would play the heel, Shawn the face and the storyline would allude to the similarities in their careers. Tragically, Eddie died in November 2005 and we never got to witness what would have been one of the best matches in his career.
2) Sting vs Undertaker
When Sting finally made his WWE debut last year at Survivor Series, many fans expected that a Wrestlemania match with The Undertaker was bound to take place. These two stars have been paralleled with each other throughout their careers with similarly dark characters. While Sting was the face of WCW, Taker represented WWE and fans have been clamouring for years to see the two come face to face with each other. However, Sting would go on to have a match with Triple H, albeit a great match, which he lost but it was a great Wrestlemania moment. Sting vs Undertaker is still very much a possibility for this year’s Wrestlemania, but time is running out for the two to have the match everyone wants to see.
1) CM Punk vs Stone Cold Steve Austin
A match between Punk and Austin would see two worlds collide. We would see the straight edge superstar face off with the beer-drinking Texas rattlesnake and while the pair have fundamental differences in their character and outlook on life, they are also very similar. Austin and Punk are both larger than life characters and are both very vocal behind the scenes, telling Vince McMahon things that he may not like to hear. This match was talked about pretty much every Wrestlemania season when Punk was still in the company, but it definitely appears the ship has sailed on this dream match. CM Punk is officially retried and now fighting in the UFC while Austin has not stepped in a WWE ring in a competitive fashion since 2003.
