Update: Marroccu's Cagliari exit expected, but 'imminent' Leeds United link played down

There are conflicting reports out of Italy regarding Leeds appointing a new sporting director.

There are conflicting reports coming out of Italy regarding a potential Leeds United appointment of a new sporting director.

Tuttomercatoweb had reported Francesco Marroccu was set to leave his post at Cagliari to join Leeds United, and link up again with Massimo Cellino.

Now Cagliari focused Sardegna Sport has moved to play down talk Marroccu is joining the Championship side, but confirming he is likely to leave the relegated Serie A side.

Their report states: "Late on Friday evening there was a rumour of an imminent agreement between Leeds president Massimo Cellino and sporting director Francesco Marroccu.

"Nothing so thorough, indeed between him and the Yorkshire club there was only the slightest contact. Marroccu is still leaving Cagliari, unless there is a surprise."

For now his work at the club is ongoing with his future likely to be officially confirmed after the last game of the season on Sunday.

Marroccu has worked at Cagliari since 2005, but the club's relegation gives reason to make changes.

The possibility of him joining Leeds remains just that, especially if contact has been made, but the club's most likely move is to bring in a sporting director with Championship experience having seen Nicola Salerno's signings enjoy mixed fortunes last season.
