Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood delivers blow to Liverpool's hopes of landing Christian Benteke

The ex-Tottenham manager says he is "convinced" that his star striker wants to stay at the club.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is “convinced” that Christian Benteke wants to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

Sherwood was speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's Premier League finale against Burnley, which some believe could mark Benteke’s last appearance for the club at Villa Park.

Having returned to top form in recent months, scoring 12 times in the past 11 matches, the Belgian striker’s name is now back in the headlines and linked with a whole host of major clubs.

Amid reported interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Roma [h/t Daily Mail], The Sun have even claimed that the in-form front man is set to force through a £30 million summer move to Anfield, which would double his wages to £100,000-per-week.

However, while Sherwood has admitted in the past that he will not prevent an unsettled Benteke from leaving, the Villa boss has rubbished those recent reports, stressing his confidence that his star forward will still be at the club next season.

In the wake of the Raheem Sterling transfer saga, he has also praised how Benteke has handled the speculation during the club’s fight to avoid relegation, declaring: “He’s only a young man, Christian, but he’s very mature in the way that he behaves and I think that he’s handled the situation well.

“I have no reason to believe that he wants to seek employment elsewhere. He seems to be very happy here.

“I think he wants to be at this football club – I’m convinced at that.”

It remains to be seen whether Sherwood will be proved right but his words should come as somewhat of a comfort to Villa fans who are dreading the thought of life without their prize goalscorer.
