Report: Premier League side Sunderland want Celtic star Nir Bitton

The Israeli international is being linked with a £5 million move to the Stadium of Light.

Celtic look set to have a battle on their hands to keep hold of Israeli midfielder Nir Bitton this summer, as it is reported that Premier League side Sunderland are now keen on his services.

It was first reported by the Express last night, with the Scottish Daily Record backing up the claims this morning.

It is claimed that the Black Cats are lining up a £5 million bid for the player. They quote a club source as stating:

“Nir Bitton’s display against Inter Milan in the Europa League brought him to our attention. We’ve been impressed with his performances in the Scottish Premiership.”

Sunderland are of course managed by former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat. He is in the position temporarily, but may stay on next season. Losing one of their star players to a former Rangers manager would certainly rub salt in the wounds.

Sunderland secured their Premier League survival with a 0-0 draw against Arsenal in the week. Premier League football may indeed be a massive lure for the midfielder, but Celtic have the advantage in being able to offer him Champions League football next term.

Bitton, who has 12 international caps for Israel, has played 47 times for Celtic this season, scoring two goals.
