The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of The Witcher 3 go toe-to-toe in this new frame-rate comparison video.

Those folks over at Digital Foundry have weighed up the performance of CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt across both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in their latest video.

In the frame-rate test video below we see the usual side-by-side comparison, along with the current frame-rate of both consoles in the top corners of the screen. Along the bottom of the footage you can see how the consoles compare in real-time in terms of frame-rate.

The Xbox One version of The Witcher 3 has no cap to its frame-rate, however the PS4 version is capped at 30fps. It’s noted that if the PS4 version does drop below it’s 30fps it “instantly locks to 20fps,” but when the Xbox One version does get close to 20fps it’s still free to fluctuate up the scale to 30fps.

Overall it appears there’s no clear ‘winner’ in terms of performance. The PS4 “is capable of smoother passages of play at times,” and “when it comes to performance, and factoring in the game’s superior 1920×1080 output, Sony’s hardware is a preference – but it’s not the clear choice we had expected.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched on Tuesday 19th May and is also available on PC. Digital Foundry will be releasing a PC test video at some point, which will no doubt show us just how pretty the game can really look.

The full article on Eurogamer goes into more depth about what you’ve seen in the video above, and you should definitely check it out if you’re undecided on which system to buy the game for.
