West Ham will face competition from Manchester United to sign midfielder Bernard Mensah

West Ham and Manchester United are among the clubs considering Bernard Mensah.

West Ham face competition from Manchester United to sign promising midfielder Bernard Mensah.

The Mirror reported three months ago that the Hammers had already spent several weeks scouting the Ghanaian, who plays for Vitoria de Guimares in Portugal's Primeira Liga.

The Metro have since reported this week that Manchester United have sent scouts to check on Mensah, who is 20-years-old.

Mensah is a central midfielder with a penchant for attacking, scoring four goals and providing five assists this season.

This is his breakthrough year, playing 32 first team games for Vitoria, having not previously featured for them.

He currently has a contract at the club until 2018, but he could be a potential bargain addition for either club. Transfermarkt list his value at just £1.7 million.

As far as Mensah is concerned, interest from the Premier League duo is a positive sign of his progress, while if West Ham want to convince him they are the best option, they need to push to him that he will stand a better chance of getting regular starts at the club, instead of moving to Manchester United.
