Jason Roberts says Tottenham's defending and tactical approach were 'a shambles'

A former player did not hold back when he talked about Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Former footballer turned BBC pundit Jason Roberts had his say on Tottenham Hotspur’s defending shortly after they saw their 2-0 lead over Leicester City wiped out on Saturday.

Harry Kane had fired Spurs into a comfortable lead only for Jamie Vardy and Wes Morgan to level things shortly after the break, and Roberts was critical of what he saw from Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

In comments published by BBC Sport, the former Blackburn Rovers striker said, “I’ve seen that goal three times and I still can’t tell you which Tottenham defender is meant to be marking Wes Morgan.

“There are three of them standing around all looking at each other. The defending from Spurs, and their tactical approach to the game, has been a shambles.”

Tottenham have impressed when going forward under Pochettino but their defending often leaves plenty to be desired.

Having capitulated against Manchester United last weekend it would have been no surprise to see the side play far more compact at the back and give away few chances against the Foxes. But that was not to be.

Luckily for Tottenham, Kane was not finished and he went on to score a hat-trick from the penalty spot. But if Pochettino wants this Spurs side to not just challenge but win major honours in the near future, he must work on his defence; both the players he currently has at his disposal and those he must sign this summer.
