Neil Redfearn discusses Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt international call-ups and future

The Leeds United boss has heaped more praise on the young duo.

There is little doubt that one of the main reasons for the recent success at Leeds United has been the form of their impressive young players.

The likes of Sam Byram and Charlie Taylor have both impressed in recent weeks but it is the eye-catching performances of Alex Mowatt and Lewis Cook that have really caught the eye.

Both midfielders have been in excellent form recently and that has culminated in them both receiving call-ups to respective England squads this week.

Cook is in the under-19 squad that takes on Denmark, France and Azerbaijan this month. Mowatt is included in the England under-20 squad that will face Mexico and USA.

Leeds boss Neil Redfearn however believes they deserved call ups to the under-21 side, but also mentioned that he has spoken to under-21 boss Gareth Southgate about protecting his young players:

He also mentioned a decision Mowatt may have to make one day regarding his future.

It was reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post in February that Scotland were also following the player, for whom he is eligible on his dad’s side.

The Sun reported a year ago that Scotland did call him up for the under-19 team, unfortunately 24 hours too late – he had already been called up to the English equivalent.

In his press conference today Redfearn commented on this decision Mowatt may have to make in his future:

If he keeps on performing the way he is at the moment, either nation would be lucky to have him.
