Twitter reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United return rumours

Manchester United have been linked with bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Could Cristiano Ronaldo really be set for a return to Manchester United?

A report in The Sun on Sunday has claimed former manager Sir Alex Ferguson is attempting to convince the Portuguese international to return to Old Trafford.

It claims Ferguson met with Ronaldo for dinner after Real Madrid's Champions League victory over Schalke, and made a plea to the reigning Ballon d'Or winner to make a stunning summer comeback to Manchester United.

United have struggled in recent seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, failing to challenge for the title, and Ronaldo would be a signing who could transform their fortunes in a way they had hopes Angel di Maria could when he signed from Real Madrid last summer.

Ronaldo helped United win the Champions League in 2008, and any hopes the Red Devils have of signing him may hinge on their ability to qualify for next year's competition. They currently sit fourth in the Premier League, but just two points off second.

At Real Madrid, Ronaldo has had a difficult 2015 so far with an inconsistent strike rate by his standards, and often appearing increasingly sulky with his on-field body language.

An alternative for United is to try to sign his teammate Gareth Bale, who has been criticised by the Spanish press for his performances, is also proven in the Premier League, and is younger with more years at his peak to give to United.

The rumours sparked plenty of debate among fans and online discussion, with our HITC Top Corner page posting the above mock-up. Here's a selection of comments from supporters...
