David Sullivan on Winston Reid’s new contract at West Ham United

West Ham United defender Winston Reid was reportedly on the radars of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan has highlighted to The Sun the importance of Winston Reid signing a new contract.

The New Zealand international defender has put pen to paper on a new six-and-a-half-year contract with the Hammers which will see him remain at Boleyn Ground until the summer of 2021.

“It’s a great deal for the club and Winston,” The Sun quotes Sullivan as saying. “I am so pleased our hard work has paid off in getting him to sign.

“This shows the board’s commitment to keeping our best players. Winston is a great player for this club and he belongs here.

“West Ham are moving forwards and upwards. He is the kind of player we want to take us into a new era.”

Reid is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and his original contract with West Ham was due to run out at the end of the season.

The former Midtjylland star was on the radars of North London clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, according to The Sun, and it is indeed a big coup from West Ham to convince him to remain at the Boleyn Ground.

As Sullivan suggests, West Ham are indeed very ambitious and are looking to break into Europe in the coming years.

Reid will be an important part of that, and him staying at West Ham also gives out a signal to other top players that the Hammers mean business.
