Wigan Athletic got a much needed win over Reading to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation very much alive.

It was a big win for Wigan Athletic in the Championship last night as they breathed new life into their survival bid by recording their first win since Boxing Day, and only their second under the management of Malky Mackay.

Jason Pearce scored the crucial winning goal for the Latics courtesy of some generous defending from the home side.

The victory over Steve Clarke's Reading side at the Madejski Stadium now means they are six points from climbing out of the Championship's relegation zone.

The result threatens to drag the Royals into the scrap towards the bottom as they are only seven points clear of the drop zone but there are six places between them and their opponents from last night. Clarke described his side's performance as 'rubbish' as the side came back down to earth with a bump after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the weekend.
