Paul Scholes: I thought Manchester United would sign Christian Eriksen

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes reveals that he was impressed with Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen when he was at Ajax.

Paul Scholes has told BT Sport that he would have liked Manchester United to sign Christian Eriksen when he was at Ajax.

Denmark international playmaker Eriksen has been one of the best players in the Premier League so far this season.

The 22-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur from Dutch giants Ajax in the summer of 2013 and has steadily improved since then.

Eriksen has scored nine goals and created 58 chances in 24 Premier League appearances so far this season, while having a pass accuracy of 84% and a shot accuracy of 49%.

United legend Scholes has now revealed that he was impressed with the Dane when he was at Ajax after playing against him in the Champions League.

“I think he is a top player,” the 40-year-old told told BT Sport during the Fletch & Sav show on Saturday morning. “It has taken him a little time to settle in, of course, but this season we have really seen that he is a top, top player.

“I played against him at Ajax in the Champions League and I thought ‘we might go for him’ - he was that impressive… He is a fantastic player and we are just starting to see. HIs technique is so good.”

Should United move for Eriksen?

Eriksen is easily one of the best young players in Europe, and has been so for a number of years now.

Although Tottenham are a big club, over the last few years they have sold their best players when suitable offers have come in. In fact, United signed Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs in the summer of 2008.

United are not lacking in creative talent at the moment as they have enough top-class players in that department.

However, if Eriksen continues to grow in stature and is able to lead Tottenham to a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, then perhaps they should look in signing him.

Even if United do not want to - or cannot - sign Eriksen in the summer, it would be good for the club’s future if they keep an eye on him.

Although Tottenham are unlikely to sell the star playmaker anytime soon, one suspects that he is not going to stay at White Hart Lane forever.

If United do look for a talented playmaker in the future, then they would do well to focus on Eriksen.
