Arsenal have an offer on the table for Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to Marca.
Illarramendi, 24, looks to be heading for the exit door at the Bernabeu, with Real close to announcing the €14 million capture of Cruzeiro’s Lucas Silva, making the Spaniard expendable.
La Liga rivals Athletic Bilbao are said to have made an offer of €25 million which the club are eager to take, but Illarramendi himself is none too thrilled about the prospect of a move to the San Mames.
However, Arsenal are reported to have made an approach about a summer switch, which the former Spain Under-21 international would accept “without thinking about it” given his Premier League ambitions.
Things remain tentative at this moment, with no agreement between the two clubs and doubts over whether Arsenal would be able to match Bilbao’s offer, but it would appear to suggest that Arsene Wenger is at least a keen admirer.
Signed from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2013 for €32.2 million, Illarramendi was a regular starter during his first season at Real, but has been in and out of the side so far this term, despite some tipping him for a first senior national team call-up prior to the World Cup.
At his best in his favoured holding role, his potential signing would make clear sense for the Gunners, given his age, pedigree and promise, but whether Wenger will be able to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the near future remains to be seen.
