Belgian news outlet gives Alderweireld injury update

Southampton's star centre-back will be out for a month according to the latest report.

According to Belgian news outlet Sport Wereld, Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld will be out of action for four weeks following the injury he sustained against Manchester United.

The on-loan centre-back has been brilliant since arriving at St Mary’s, ensuring the departure of Dejan Lovren did not impact the Saints and arguably strengthening them. But the injury he suffered in the 1-0 win at Old Trafford had prompted manager Ronald Koeman to refuse to rule out signing a new defender this month.

In quotes published by the Daily Echo, Koeman said, “I don’t know (if we need to sign another centre-half); we have to speak about that.”

But the latest report suggests Alderweireld could be back sooner than first expected, with his torn muscle allegedly healing by mid-February.

Whether that prevents Southampton from delving into the transfer market once more remains to be seen, but it is relatively positive news given the importance of the Belgian international and the club’s fantastic campaign to date.

When you consider some of the inflated fees paid for defenders, the loan signing of Alderweireld will have embarrassed many and proved just what canny negotiators the south coast club are.
