Former Manchester United boss looked depressed as the club sunk to a 1-0 loss to Southampton.

Sir Alex Ferguson appeared glum as Manchester United lost at home to Southampton on Sunday.

The Red Devils were defeated by a goal from summer signing Dusan Tadic, and failed to register a single shot on target.

As United headed to defeat late on, the SkySports cameras panned to United's watching former boss in the crowd, who seemed downbeat as the clock ticked down.

Louis van Gaal's side have taken just one point from their last two games, having only managed a draw away to Stoke on New Year's Day.

United are now 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea, and surely any talk of a title challenge which resurfaced during a winning run, can be put to bed.

They have slipped to fourth position, overtaken by a Southampton side who have recorded superb back-to-back wins over Arsenal and United without conceding a goal.

Gone is the Saints lack of belief, with the victory over the Gunners seeing them arrive at Old Trafford with a mental edge which was lacking when they lost at home to United a few weeks earlier.
