Mutu had been expected to rejoin Fiorentina on a temporary basis, the club where he was lethal between 2006 and 2011 when rebuilding his career after a controversial spell at Chelsea which ended in his contract being terminated for failing a drugs test.

The fiery marksman was expected to feature for Pune during the Indian Super League season, but the move fell through.

His last club were Petrolul Ploiești and there were concerns over his fitness, but Fiorentina had confirmed their offer to give him a chance to impress in training.

It remains to be seen whether Mutu has actually hung up his boots or whether he was speaking in anger at the constant media attention that follows him in his homeland.
