LA Galaxy fans took to Twitter on Wednesday to react to confirmation that Steven Gerrard will arrive from Liverpool in July.

LA Galaxy fans were decidedly active on Twitter on Wednesday, following confirmation that Steven Gerrard will join the MLS club as a Designated Player in July when his Liverpool contract expires.

Now 34, Gerrard has spent the last few seasons playing as a deep-lying midfielder for the Reds, but Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena expects his new signing to fill a more advanced role once he arrives at the StubHub Center.

“I think the one area I kind of almost want to rule out is the fact that I don’t see Gerrard playing in front of our centre-backs as a permanent player there,” he told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview.

“I think he needs to be in more advanced positions. By the nature of his qualities as a player, he’s a box-to-box player; he plays on both sides of the ball so he’ll serve us well there. But we certainly think that we need to make sure he’s pushed closer to our strikers than closer to our centre-backs.”

In the Galaxy, Gerrard will be joining the most successful franchise in MLS history, who have won a league-record five MLS Cup titles, including three over the past four seasons under current boss Arena.

Set to link up in LA with former Liverpool teammate Robbie Keane, the league’s reigning MVP, his new side will almost certainly be in contention for a sixth championship in 2015, and fans appear more than excited for his impending arrival.
